Israeli Troops Kill Palestinian in Home, Witnesses Say

GAZA (Reuters) -
Israeli troops guarding a Jewish
settlement in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) fired into a neighboring
Palestinian refugee camp Thursday, killing a man in his home,
relatives and witnesses said.
They said the 42-year-old Palestinian was closing a window
in his home in Rafah overnight when troops at a watchtower in
Rafiah Yam settlement overlooking the southern Gaza camp shot
him dead.
Rafah has been a major flashpoint in a three-year-old
Palestinian uprising, with regular raids mounted by Israeli
forces against militants who smuggle arms from nearby Egypt.
An Israeli military spokeswoman denied there had been any
operations Thursday but said the shooting report was being
investigated.
Last month, the army announced it had arrested a soldier
who had admitted shooting an unarmed British activist in Rafah
in April. The Briton, a "human shield" in the pro-Palestinian
International Solidarity Movement, is clinically dead.
