US approves new financial aid package to Israel

Date: 11-22-04

The US House and Senate approved a massive $388 billion catch-all spending bill on Saturday for 2005 which includes $2.2 billion in military assistance and $360 million in economic assistance for Israel.

It also includes an additional $50 million in refugee resettlement assistance, which is meant to help Israel settle new immigrants.

The spending bill also contains a provision allowing Israel an extra two years to finish using $9 billion in loan guarantees, granted to Israel early last year to help it make arrangements in anticipation of the US-led Iraq invasion. Israel will now have five years rather than three to use the guarantees.

And it also requires the US secretary of state to report to Congress on whether UN Relief and Works Agency employees or facilities have been involved in Palestinian terrorist activities.

The House voted on Saturday 344-51 in favor of the bill and the Senate passed it 65-30. White House staffers are reviewing the bill and it is expected to be sent to US President George W. Bush for his signature in the coming days.

Separately, the Bush administration is discussing the possibility of awarding the Palestinian Authority $20 million in assistance to help it organize a January presidential election.
