Palestinian killed, four Israeli soldiers wounded in Gaza violence
Date: Wednesday November 3
GAZA CITY (AFP) - A Palestinian man was shot dead and four Israeli soldiers wounded in a flareup in the southern Gaza Strip.
Raafat al-Hams, 26, died after being shot in the head by troops operating in the Rafah refugee camp on the border with Egypt, Palestinian security sources told AFP, saying he was sitting in his car at the time.
Another three Palestinians were also wounded by gunfire in the camp, they added Wednesday.
Further north, two Israeli soldiers were lightly wounded when an anti-tank missile fired by Palestinians hit an army base near Neve Dekalim in the Jewish settlement bloc of Gush Katif, an army spokeswoman said.
An Israeli civilian in the area was also treated for shock, she added.
Military sources had earlier said three people were injured in the strike.
The army also said two Israeli soldiers were wounded by Palestinian sniper fire aimed at the Jewish settlement of Rafiah Yam on the Gaza-Egypt border.
"One was hit in the cheek and his condition is moderate. The other was hit in the hand and is lightly injured," the army said.
Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to AFP.
Rafiah Yam is one of 21 Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip that are due for evacuation by the end of 2005 under the terms of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan.
The latest death brings to 4,550 the number of people killed since the start of the Palestinian intifada in September 2000, according to an AFP tally, including 3,516 Palestinians and 960 Israelis.
