Palestinian shot dead by Israeli troops near military base AFP

JERUSALEM (AFP) - An unarmed Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli soldiers near an army base in the Ramallah area of the West Bank, military sources said.
"A suspect Palestinian was seen approaching the security fence around the base. The soldiers tried to stop him by firing warning shots and then fired in his direction" at the Ofra military base, one source told AFP.
"The Palestinian was not armed. The soldiers gave him first aid but he died of his injuries."
The latest death brought the overall toll since the September 2000 start of the Palestinian uprising to 4,595, including 3,559 Palestinians and 962 Israelis.
Separately, the Israeli air force destroyed a rocket launcher in the northern Gaza Strip as Palestinian militants were about to launch an attack, military sources said.
"A group of Palestinians were spotted in Beit Hanun as they were about to fire a Qassam rocket on Israel's territory. The rocket launcher was destroyed and the Palestinians fled the scene," they said.
The crude rockets are manufactured by the radical Islamist movement Hamas and named after its military wing -- the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.
Six Israelis have been killed in rocket attacks in the past few months and the army launched a massive 18-day raid into the northern Gaza Strip in late September to halt the firing.
