JERUSALEM (AFP) -
Israel's Supreme Court extended for another week an order for the construction of a section of the separation barrier in the West Bank be halted, court sources said.
The freeze, which will remain in force until March 17, allows the court to examine appeals presented by residents of eight Palestinian villages in the West Bank against construction of the barrier on their land.
The order aimed at allowing time to negotiate the route of the barrier affects a section in northeastern Jerusalem, in areas including the Palestinian villages of Beit Surik and Biddo.
According to court sources, the state told the judges that the cost of delaying the construction of the fence would reach up to two million shekels (450,000 dollars).
Peace activists from the Israeli group Rabbis for Human Rights demonstrated in front of the Supreme Court Thursday morning.
After the hearing they vowed to continue protests in the village of Beit Duqqu, west of Ramallah, which is not included in the section of the barrier affected by the suspension order.
Palestinian demonstrators backed by foreign peace activists have clashed with the border police in Beit Duqqu several times over the past week during protests aimed at preventing work on the construction of the controversial barrier.
