BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AFP) - A young Palestinian stone-thrower was shot dead by Israeli troops in the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem, Palestinian medical and security sources said.

Mahmud Omar al-Zighari, 20, was shot in the head by soldiers guarding Rachel's Tomb, a site in Bethlehem holy to both Jews and Muslims but to which only Jews have access, the sources said.

Israeli military sources said the soldiers opened fire on a Palestinian throwing a Molotov cocktail and added that one army vehicle was burnt in the clashes.

His death brought to 3,883 the number of people killed since the start of the Palestinian uprising in late September 2000, including 2,918 Palestinians and 896 Israelis.
