GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli soldiers shot dead a 14-year-old Palestinian boy Thursday during a raid on a refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip (news - web sites), medics and witnesses said.

Palestinians also accused the Israelis of killing a militant who died in an explosion at his home in the Rafah camp, but the army said it was not responsible.

Palestinian security sources said 14-year-old Mohammed Othman was killed when he was caught up in clashes while he was on his way to school. Three other people were also wounded in the incident, they said.

An Israeli military source said there were probably casualties from crossfire during heavy exchanges that erupted when troops backed by tanks raided Rafah to search for tunnels used to smuggle weapons from neighboring Egypt.

The raid came a day after three Palestinians from the militant Hamas group were killed in an Israeli air-strike south of Gaza City.

Palestinians said an Israeli rocket also killed a militant commander at his home in Rafah early Thursday, but Israel denied any involvement in the explosion.

Rafah has long been a flashpoint for violence. Israeli forces have launched frequent missions against militant hideouts there during more than three years of conflict.

Dozens of people have been killed in Rafah and hundreds of Palestinian homes demolished in places where soldiers destroyed smuggling tunnels.

Israel's army chief accused Egypt earlier this week of failing to do enough to prevent weapons from being smuggled into Gaza for use in attacks against Israel.
