Palestinian child killed in Israeli helicopter raid on Gaza
Date: Tue, May 11, 2004
GAZA CITY (AFP) - A 12-year-old Palestinian was killed and five other people wounded when an Israeli helicopter fired a missile near a market in Gaza City, Palestinian medical sources said.
The helicopter struck a car which was apparently empty and parked near a busy market in the eastern Shajayah neighbourhood, witnesses said.
According to military sources, the raid targeted a group of armed Palestinians who were about to attack Israeli troops.
The raid came after intense fighting in the neighbourhood of Zeitun, during which an Israeli armoured personnel carrier was destroyed in a Palestinian bomb attack, killing all six crew members.
Five Palestinians were also killed in the Zeitun clashes and scores wounded, Palestinian medical sources said.
The latest death brought to 3,990 the number of fatalities in the Palestinian uprising which began in September 2000, including 3,009 Palestinians and 911 Israelis, according to an AFP tally.
