Israeli troops kill Palestinian in Gaza

Date: Wednesday May 26

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli troops have shot dead two unarmed Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in separate incidents, Palestinian witnesses and medics say.

Witnesses at Rafah refugee camp said a 42-year-old resident was hit by gunfire from one of the guard towers at the nearby Jewish Atzmona settlement on Wednesday as he was standing by his car.

But a military spokesman said there was no known Israeli fire in the area.

The dead man's neighbourhood, Tel Sultan, was the focus of an Israeli sweep of Rafah in southern Gaza that ended on Monday. At least 42 Palestinians were killed in the six-day raid, which Israel said was aimed at uncovering gunrunner tunnels from nearby Egypt.

In a separate incident on Tuesday night, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian spotted crawling towards Gaza's boundary fence near the Sufa crossing point, military sources said. Sufa is a frequent target of militant attacks.

Palestinian medics who recovered the 18-year-old man's body on Wednesday said he was unarmed. The man's family, from the Gaza refugee camp of Khan Younis, said he was mentally retarded and had gone missing on Monday.
