Date: Tue, Jun 15, 2004
NABLUS, West Bank (AFP) - A Palestinian teenager was shot dead and two others wounded by Israeli troops in the Nablus region of the northern West Bank, witnesses and medical sources said.
Salah Hawani, 18, sustained fatal gunshot wounds in the back when troops opened fire at a group of stone-throwing Palestinians in the Balata refugee camp, which adjoins the city, they said Tuesday.
An army spokesman said that soldiers had opened fire and hit "a Palestinian armed with an M-16 assault rifle" before he had had time to shoot at the Israeli troops.
Explosive devices and gunfire had also been aimed at the soldiers, the spokesman added.
His death brings the overall toll since the September 2000 start of the Palestinian intifada, or uprising, to 4,108, including 3,117 Palestinians and 920 Israelis.
