Date: Fri, Jun 25, 2004

NABLUS, West Bank (AFP) - Two young Palestinian men were shot dead, within hours of each other, by Israeli troops in Nablus on Friday during a vast search operation in the Casbah district of the northern West Bank town, Palestinian sources said.

Residents said soldiers killed Ihab Slim, 19, at his house, and also wounded his brother and father.

A military spokesman confirmed that Israeli forces had opened fire "on suspects on a balcony".

Several hours earlier another Palestinian was killed in the Casbah, where troops have imposed a curfew.

Israeli military sources said Mohammed Sokha, 18, had been preparing to throw a gas cannister at troops. He was among a group of stone-throwing youths, the sources added.

The latest deaths bring to 4,120 the number of people killed since the start of the intifada at the end of September 2000, including 3,128 Palestinians and 920 Israelis.

The search operation could last several days, the army said, adding that an explosives belt had been seized and a roadside bomb neutralised.

Israeli soldiers distributed tracts calling on residents to hand over six activists of the hardline Palestinian Al-Aqsa martyrs brigade.

Meanwhile in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) three young Palestinians, including a 12-year-old child, were shot and injured by Israeli troops late Friday in the "Brazil" refugee camp in the town of Rafah in southern Gaza, medical sources said.
