Palestinian shot dead by Israeli troops near West Bank barrier

Date: Mon, Jun 07, 2004

JENIN, West Bank (AFP) - A 24-year-old Palestinian with learning difficulties was shot dead by Israeli forces near the separation barrier in the northern West Bank, medical and security sources said.

Omar Farekh was declared dead on arrival at Tulkarem hospital after being fatally shot near the town of Farun, the sources said.

Israeli military sources confirmed that troops had fired in Farekh's direction after warning shots had failed to stop him.

"A unit carrying out a routine patrol identified a suspicious man that was walking in its direction with a plastic bag in his hand.

"The soldiers fired warning shots to make him stop, but he ran away and troops then shot in his direction," the sources told AFP.

The death brings the overall toll since the September 2000 start of the Palestinian intifada, or uprising, to 4,101, including 3,110 Palestinians and 920 Israelis.
