UN voices "dismay" at Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace
Date: Tue, Aug 10, 2004
BEIRUT (AFP) - UN envoy Staffan de Mistura expressed "dismay" at repeated Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace over the previous 36 hours.
"There were four violations involving five aircraft and eight helicopters over Naqura, Kafr Killa and el-Adaisseh yesterday (Monday)," de Mistura said in a statement.
"Today, a further six violations were recorded, involving eight aircraft and four drones."
The UN envoy noted that there had been "no reports" of retaliatory anti-aircraft fire from Shiite Muslim militant group Hezbollah but warned "all parties that one violation cannot justify another."
"These air violations disturb the relative calm that had returned to the Blue Line (the Israeli-Lebanese border) since the events of July 20," he said, referring to clashes that saw two Israeli soldiers and one Hezbollah militant killed and prompted Israeli mock air raids over Beirut.
Israel pulled its ground troops out of Lebanon in May 2000 but has since repeatedly violated Lebanese airspace.
