Israeli Missiles Hit Gaza Refugee Camp -- Witnesses

Date: Sat, Aug 14, 2004

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Israeli helicopter gunships fired three missiles into the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) Sunday following clashes with militants, Palestinian witnesses said.

Israeli military sources said the army fired into the area to protect troops from attacks by Palestinian militants.

The witnesses said at least one missile hit an open area near the border with Egypt in the southern Gaza Strip, while another hit near an empty home. Medics said they had received no reports of casualties.

Israel has often raided Rafah, a militant stronghold, to arrest gunmen and destroy tunnels on the Egyptian border used to smuggle weapons.

Israel plans to evacuate Jewish settlers from Gaza in 2005. Palestinian militants want to portray this as a victory, but Israel is bent on preventing that by smashing them first.
