GAZA CITY (AFP) - Israeli soldiers shot dead two Palestinians who hurled a grenade towards them near a border crossing in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical and military sources said.

The incident came just hours after Palestinian security chiefs pledged to deploy their forces around the border in the wake of several deadly incidents in recent days.

"IDF (army) forces identified two Palestinians with cameras in a prohibited area near the security fence" which separates Gaza from Israel, one Israeli military source told AFP.

"When the forces approached them, the Palestinians hurled a grenade. The forces returned fire and identified hitting the two of them."

Palestinian medical sources later confirmed that the bodies of the two men, who were not immediately identified, were returned by the Israeli military after being retrieved near the Nahal Oz checkpoint, which lies next to the Karni border crossing.

Six Israelis were killed last Thursday in a Palestinian suicide attack on the Karni crossing which prompted Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to sever contacts with the Palestinian Authority.

The latest deaths bring the overall toll since the September 2000 start of the Palestinian uprising to 4,711, including 3,657 Palestinians and 980 Israelis, according to an AFP count.

Meanwhile witnesses and medical sources said that five Palestinians were shot by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint in the south of the territory which had been closed in the aftermath of a suicide attack on Tuesday night in which an Israeli security agent was killed. One was in a serious condition.

The radical Hamas movement also claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on troops manning a post near the Erez border crossing between Gaza and Israel.

Israeli army radio said that two soldiers were wounded in the attack.
