(Kyodo) _ Japan has decided to contribute $4,826,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees to help improve the lives of Palestinian refugees, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

The disbursement to the agency is part of $100 million in economic aid to the Palestinians that Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi pledged during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Tokyo in May.

Of the total to be provided to the U.N. agency, $1 million will be used for five projects including providing medical equipment in Lebanon, setting up a legal consultation office in Jordan, and providing health services to Palestinian women and their children in the West Bank, the ministry said.

The remainder will be used for expenses such as education and other social services, it said.
