First Palestinian Conflict Fatality Since Truce-Medics Reuters

GAZA (Reuters) - A Palestinian man died on Wednesday after he was hit by gunfire from a Gaza Jewish settlement, in the first conflict-related fatality since Israel and the Palestinians declared a truce a day ago, medics said.
The 20-year-old from Rafah refugee camp in southern Gaza was shot from the nearby Atzmona settlement, which has an Israeli army garrison.
An Israeli military source said troops had fired warning shots, suspecting an infiltration attempt, when four Palestinians came within 50 meters of a security fence near the Jewish settlement. He said the Palestinians fled.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced a cease-fire at a summit in Egypt on Tuesday to end four years of bloodshed and prepare the ground for peacemaking.
A Hamas militant was also killed while preparing a bomb as part of a training exercise in the Gaza Strip, sources with the Islamic group said.
The Israeli military source said Palestinians had told the army the man was trying to plant a bomb when it blew up.
"This is an example of intentional terrorist activity despite the truce," the Israeli source said.
Hamas has said it is not bound by the truce but will continue to maintain a period of calm at the behest of Abbas.
