WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration has been in contact with Palestinian leaders over the bombing at a Tel Aviv nightclub and have urged them to help find those responsible, the White House said on Saturday.
"We have been in touch with the Palestinian leadership to urge immediate and credible action by Palestinian security authorities, in cooperation with the government of Israel, to determine who is behind this terrorist act and to bring them to justice," the White House said in a statement issued under the name of press secretary Scott McClellan.
The suicide bombing on Friday at a Tel Aviv nightclub killed four Israelis. It dealt a heavy blow to hopes for peace that had arisen after a truce agreed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
The White House statement echoed one issued on Friday by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that condemned the attack.
Palestinian officials said three suspected Palestinian militants were arrested in the bomber's village. Israeli troops arrested five others there, including two brothers of the bomber, during a raid.
The Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the bombing.
