Abbas to visit Japan AFP

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas said he planned to make an official visit to Japan in May.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi "officially invited me to Tokyo, and I plan to make the trip, in principle in May," Abbas said during a press conference following a meeting with Japanese Middle East peace envoy Tatso Arima.
Abbas thanked Japan for "its substantial financial support for the Palestinian Authority."
He said he had briefed Arima on his February 8 summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, in which they declared a truce in the four-year-long conflict, and on a meeting in London this week on Palestinian reform.
Abbas called on Israel to resume dialogue with the Palestinians, which it suspended following a suicide bombing attack on a Tel Aviv nightclub that killed five Israelis and wounded dozens on February 25.
Turning to domestic matters, he played down differences that have emerged between younger militants of the ruling Fatah party and its old guard.
He said such things are "normal" with the approach of municipal elections in April, a parliamentary election in July and internal party elections in August.
