JERUSALEM - Israel is to turn over control of the West Bank town of Jericho to Palestinian security Wednesday, to be followed two or three days later by Tulkarem, Israeli officials said after a meeting of Palestinian and Israeli Cabinet ministers.
The handover has been delayed by disagreements over the size of territory to be transferred along with the towns, but the Israeli officials said Monday a compromise was reached.
They said Palestinians accepted the Israeli position of holding on to a roadblock at the entrance to Jericho, and Israel agreed to re-examine the issue in a month.
Qalqiliya, near Tulkarem, is to be the third town to be handed over, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
At a Feb. 8 summit meeting in Egypt, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) agreed on a halt to four years of bloodshed and also set out a series of confidence-building measures, including handover of five West Bank towns to Palestinian security control. The other two are Bethlehem and Ramallah.
