OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada said it was disappointed at Israel's vow to expand settlements in the West Bank which has sparked a new row with the Palestinians.

"Canada is disappointed by the Israeli governments decision to build more housing units in the West Bank and urges the Israeli government to reconsider this decision," said Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew.

Pettigrew argued that the plan was inconsistent with international law and the internationally-backed roadmap towards peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

"This announcement is out of step with renewed signs of cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians," Pettigrew said.

Israel said Monday it would build around 3,500 new homes in an expansion of its largest Jewish settlements in the West Bank, despite Palestinian fury.

US officials earlier pressed Israeli and Palestinian leaders not to allow the new row over settlements to upset peace talks.
