JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz was to leave for Washington to press home his criticism of the Palestinian leadership for not doing more to crack down on armed groups, his ministry said.

Mofaz was scheduled to hold talks with US Vice President Dick Cheney and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld during his visit.

The Israeli defence ministry said Mofaz would use his meetings to reiterate criticism that Palestinian security forces were not doing enough to crack down on militants plotting new attacks against Israel.

On Wednesday, Mofaz said Israel's promised transfer of security control of West Bank towns had been jeopardised by slow Palestinian progress in meeting security commitments.

Israel has handed over control for the northern district of Tulkarem to the Palestinian Authority and ceded limited control to Palestinian forces in Jericho.

The handover of security in five West Bank towns was a key issue agreed at a landmark peace summit in Egypt early last month.
