JERUSALEM (AFP) - Four crew members were missing after a Syrian cargo ship heading from Egypt to Syria sank about 50 kilometres (30 miles) off the Mediterranean coast of northern Israel, the Israeli army said.
Another ship in the area fished three survivors out of the water while Israeli, French and US naval forces searched for the other four crew members, an army spokesman said.
The three survivors, two Syrian nationals and an Egyptian, reportedly said they were travelling with a cargo of cement from Egypt to Syria with a crew of seven.
An Israeli naval missile boat transferred the survivors to another Syrian vessel which then headed back to Syria, the spokesman said.
Searches were called off after 10 hours due to bad weather conditions but would start again in the morning, he added, saying no further survivors had been located.
The sunken vessel, which apparently ran into difficulties because it was overloaded with cement, was owned by a Syrian company, he said.
