WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States expressed concern over Russia's pledge to give Palestinians military equipment.

"One area of concern, obviously, for all of us is that lethal equipment not find their way into the hands of terrorists and to those who are committed to using violence to destroy the peace process" between Palestinians and Israelis, said US State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli.

"So our view is that there need to be clear guarantees, clear measures taken to prevent that before moving forward," Ereli said.

In a visit to the West Bank Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would provide military training and equipment to Palestinian security forces.

"We will give the Palestinian leadership technical help and deliveries of (military) equipment and training," Putin said, promising "aviation technology" and helicopters would come first along with law enforcement training in Moscow.
