RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qorei criticised the Arab world for failing to support the Palestinians in their efforts to loosen Israel's hold over annexed east Jerusalem.

"Jerusalem is in danger and the Arab world says nothing, it has not said outright 'enough, that's a red line'," Qorei told a conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah organised by the religious affairs ministry.

"Everyday, Jewish extremists make calls to overrun the Al-Aqsa mosque and all we have heard (from the Arab world) are faint-hearted words with no expression of support," he added.

Ultra-nationalist extremists have repeatedly threatened to demonstrate against Israel's impending withdrawal from the Gaza Strip at the flashpoint mosque compound within Jerusalem's Old City, part of the occupied sector.

Each time, thousands of Palestinians and Arab Israelis flock to the esplanade -- the third holiest site in world Islam and also the holiest site in Judaism -- to protect the revered mosque.

The Palestinian prime minister also slammed Israel for planning to use its Gaza pullout to strengthen its control over the West Bank and Jerusalem.

"They are going to withdraw from Gaza to better control the West Bank. They are going to leave four settlements in the Jenin area (of the northern West Bank) to Judaise Jerusalem," Qorei said.

In place of the "2,000 homes" to be torn down in more than 20 Jewish settlements in Gaza, Israel will build "3,500 homes in Jerusalem and another 4,000 in the West Bank" the premier said.
