JENIN, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian gunman and wounded two others during an attempted attack on a military base near the West Bank city of Jenin late on Saturday, an Israeli army spokeswoman said.

The gunman died from wounds while being taken by ambulance to an Israeli hospital after he was shot by soldiers during an exchange of fire near the base, the spokeswoman said. The two other wounded gunmen were also evacuated to hospitals in Israel.

"The gunmen drove past an Israeli army base and opened fire from their car. The soldiers returned fire and hit the three gunmen," the army spokeswoman said.

Israel Radio said the three opened fire on the base, which served as a district headquarters for the army, from a distance and were hit by troops patrolling outside the perimeter of the camp. It said the other two gunmen suffered light wounds.

It was not immediately clear which Palestinian militant group was behind the attack near the village of Arrabeh, a stronghold for the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

An official with a local militant group declined to say which group stood behind the attack, simply describing the gunmen as "resistance men".

Palestinian militant groups have said they would abide by a de facto truce declared by President Mahmoud Abbas in February. But they have launched sporadic attacks which they have said were in response to Israeli "aggressions".
