Sharon criticizes Syrian support for Hamas AFP

PARIS (AFP) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon lashed out at Syria, alleging it helped Islamist movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
"Syria continues to be the headquarters of the most dangerous Islamist organisations - Hamas and Jihad," he said in an interview with France 3 television channel during a three-day visit to France.
"The orders come from there. Their training takes place on Syrian territory and at the same time Syrians have not given up their will to control Lebanon," he said, referring to Syria's pullout from Lebanon in March and April.
"There are still Syrian secret agents, as well as soldiers from the Iranian revolution in Lebanon," he said.
Sharon also expressed concern at the growing political role of the militant Islamic party Hezbollah in Lebanon.
"Finally," Sharon said, "we have the Hezbollah problem. The terrorist organisation must be disarmed. It is not possible that a democratic Lebanese regime has within it an armed organisation which acts as the envoy of Syria and Iran."
Hezbollah, which has been represented in the Lebanese parliament since 1992, won 14 seats in general elections which took place in May and June and has a representative in the cabinet for the first time.
