JERUSALEM - Israel's Housing Ministry said Thursday it has issued tenders to build 72 housing units in a West Bank settlement near Jerusalem.

The tenders are likely to raise the ire of the U.S. government, which opposes settlement construction in the West Bank because it violates the "road map" peace plan, presented two years ago by President Bush.

Ministry spokesman Kobi Bleich said there was a consensus in the Israeli government to build the housing units in Betar Illit, which lies on the outskirts of Jerusalem. He said he was not authorized to address the question of U.S. opposition to settlement building.

This year, the ministry has issued tenders to build 235 housing units in settlements, most in the Jerusalem area, Bleich said.
