Israeli troops in position to prevent Gaza attacks

JERUSALEM (AFP) - The Israeli army bolstered its forces to prevent attacks by Palestinian militants during the evacuation of settlers from the Gaza Strip.

"The army has completed its deployment in and around the Gaza Strip designed to protect the forces and the settlers which are being evacuated," a miltary spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.

A total of three regiments, each comprising around 400 troops, had taken up positions in near Khan Yunis in the south of Gaza and Beit Hanun in the north.

Some 7,500 members of the Palestinian security forces are also in place around the Gaza settlements in order to prevent attacks by militants from groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
