RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - The Palestinian Authority has demanded that Israel release all Palestinian prisoners originally from the Gaza Strip after completing its withdrawal from the occupied territory.

"The Palestinian Authority officially asked Israel to release 650 prisoners from the Gaza Strip who were arrested by the Israeli army during the years of the occupation," Palestinian prisoner affairs minister Sufian Abu Zaydeh told AFP on Monday.

"Given that Israel is bringing to an end its occupation of the Gaza Strip, it must release all prisoners being detained from this region," he added.

Around 8,000 Palestinians are being detained in Israeli custody, including several held in prison for more than 25 years.

Israel on Monday formally began its historic operation to dismantle all 21 Jewish settlements and army bases in the Gaza Strip after a 38-year occupation.
