MOSCOW (AFP) - The Palestinian Authority's top foreign affairs official, Nasser al-Kidwa, arrived in Moscow for talks on the consequences of the departure of Israeli settlers from the Gaza Strip, Russian news agencies said.

Al-Kidwa, who has the rank of foreign minister, was due to meet on Thursday with his Russian opposite number Sergei Lavrov.

"It's important to discuss what to do after the departure of Israeli forces from Gaza, including to discuss questions concerning east Jerusalem," ITAR-TASS quoted Al-Kidwa as saying upon arriving in Moscow.

The meeting comes a week after Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas held a telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin on plans for Russia to provide aid to the authority following the withdrawal.

Russia is a member of the "quartet" that is sponsoring the Middle East "roadmap" peace plan and also includes the European Union, the United Nations and the United States.
