AMMAN (AFP) - Jordan's King Abdullah II said Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip should be followed up by further withdrawals from the West Bank to secure stability in the region and Palestinian statehood.
"The Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip is an important step in the history of the Palestinian cause," the king said at a meeting with former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, a court statement said.
Israel must also pull out from the West Bank in line with the Middle East roadmap in order to "reach a peace that achieves the aspirations of the Palestinian and Israeli people for security and stability", the king said.
"The pursuit of the Israeli pullout from the West Bank will pave the way towards peaceful co-existance between Palestinians and Israelis and prevent attempts aimed at maintaining the cycle of violence and terrorism," he said.
"Achieving the hopes of the Palestinian people to set up a sustainable Palestinian state on Palestinian land is the guarantee for stability in the region."
The Jordanian monarch also voiced hope that the international community would adopt a comprehensive plan to shore up the Palestinian economy and rebuild Palestinian institutions.
