LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Perhaps Love," the first Chinese musical made in more than three decades, is Hong Kong's official submission in the foreign language film category for next year's Academy Awards.
An industry panel in the territory selected the film over the Jackie Chan vehicle "The Myth" and director Stanley Kwan's "Everlasting Regret."
The story is about a director who casts his girlfriend in a musical with an up-and-coming actor, unaware that they have a previous relationship.
The cast features a host of top names from around Asia, including popular Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung, mainland Chinese actress Zhou Xun, Japanese-Taiwanese star Takeshi Kaneshiro and Korean superstar Ji Jin Hee.
The $10 million film was directed by Peter Ho-Sun Chan, who previously shot such award-winning films as "Comrades, Almost a Love Story" and "He's A Woman, She's A Man."
Meanwhile, "Paradise Now," which deals with two potential suicide bombers who plan an attack on Tel Aviv, was chosen by Palestine as its official Oscar contender.
Winner of three awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, "Paradise Now" opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 28, via Warner Independent Pictures.
Although primarily a Dutch-financed production, "Paradise Now" is eligible to represent Palestine because most of the dialogue is in Arabic and most scenes were shot in Palestine.
And Mexico will be represented by Gustavo Loza's "Al Otro Lado," which tells three separate stories that share a common immigration theme.
The deadline for foreign language film submissions is Monday, October 3. Nominations in all categories will be announced Tuesday, January 31, with the Oscar ceremony set for Sunday, March 5.
