JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel is to intensify its reprisals against Palestinian militants for firing makeshift rockets against the Jewish state, Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said Sunday as militants launched two more missiles without causing casualties or damage.

"Due to the recent increase in the firing of Qassam rockets, I ordered an increase in pressure and offensive operations to step up," Mofaz was quoted as telling a weekly cabinet meeting.

The defence ministry confirmed that Israel will "intensify its actions against terrorists in order to defend its citizens" and heighten its state of alert ahead of a general election on March 28.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have fired dozens of improvised rockets against southern Israel since the withdrawal of troops and settlers was completed last September ending a 38-year occupation.
