RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - The Palestinian Authority has decided to end the monopoly on the mobile telecommunications market and will call for tenders for a second licensee, an official said.

The Palestine Investment Fund will hold 25-30 percent of the new company, 30 percent of shares will be open to public subscription, another 10-15 percent to "specialist companies" and the balance to a strategic partner, the source said.

No details were given on when tenders would be called for, or when the new company was expected to begin operating.

The formation of the second company will end the monopoly of Jawwal, a subsidiary of the Palestinian telecommunications company, Paltel, and which has some 500,000 subscribers.
