NDP urges Ottawa to redirect cancelled funding for Palestinian aid

On Wednesday, Canada became the first country after Israel to cut funding and diplomatic ties to the Palestinian Authority because the new Hamas government refuses to renounce violence.

NDP Foreign Affairs critic Alexa McDonough says the party recognizes the "serious dilemma" facing Canada and other countries over the issue.

But McDonough says Canada must reconcile its stated goals of supporting and building democracy in Palestine with suspension of direct aid to programs such as education, housing, judicial reform, support for refugees and economic development.

She's demanding the Conservative government ensure all cancelled funding to such programs be redirected to organizations directly involved in delivering humanitarian aid and democracy building in the Palestinian Authority.

McDonough says any net reduction in aid to the Palestinian people is shortsighted and counterproductive.
