GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh appealed for calm in Gaza on Friday after the killing of a top militant in a car explosion, and said the Hamas-led government he leads would launch an investigation. Haniyeh told Reuters that he asked Interior Minister Saeed Seyam to open an immediate investigation into the death of Abu Youssef al-Quqa, a top commander in the Popular Resistance Committees, an umbrella group of militants in Gaza often responsible for rocket attacks against Israel.
Fighters loyal to the slain militant accused Palestinian security forces of collaborating with Israel in the killing, triggering a series of gun fights in Gaza after the explosion.
"I urge Palestinians to avoid falling in the trap of internal sedition so that our arrows do not return to strike our own chests. Trading of accusation must be steopped so that the interior ministry can complete the investigation," Haniyeh said.
The Israeli army denied any involvement in the explosion, which also wounded a young boy. "It wasn't us," said an army spokeswoman. Israel has launched several recent air strikes in Gaza targeting militants.
The surge in violence in Gaza came one day after a Palestinian suicide bomber killed four Israelis in the West Bank. Top Hamas officials defended the suicide bombing as "resistance" against Israeli "crimes", putting them at odds with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who condemned the bombing.
