Israel's Peres to seek Vatican support of Hamas boycott

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Former Israeli premier Shimon Peres is to visit the Vatican to ask Pope Benedict XVI to join a boycott of the new Palestinian government headed by Islamist faction Hamas, army radio reported.Nobel Peace laureate Peres is number two on the Kadima list of acting premier Ehud Olmert which won Tuesday's Israeli general election.
Many Western countries have joined the Israeli boycott of the Hamas-led government that was sworn in on Wednesday after its shock election victory in January, saying the faction must first recognize Israel and renounce violence.
