BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AFP) - One Palestinian militant was shot dead and two others were wounded by Israeli special forces in the West Bank town of Bethlehem, Palestinian security and medical sources said.

The forces had opened fire at two vehicles near the centre of Bethlehem, the sources said. The dead man, whose identity was not immediately given, was a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

The two others who were wounded were arrested by the Israeli forces, the sources added Sunday.

There was no immediate comment on the incident from the Israeli military.

The latest death brings to 5,030 the overall toll since the September 2000 start of the Palestinian uprising, according to an AFP count.
