WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush had a private dinner at the White House Monday with Jordan's King Abdullah, according to a presidential spokeswoman, who did not explain the reason for the visit.
"It was a private dinner, one-on-one, just between the president and the king," Deputy White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters Tuesday.
Jordan's embassy in Washington said in a statement that the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.
"His majesty expressed gratitude for the continued support provided by the United States and thanked the President for considering additional assistance to Jordan this year, at a time when Jordan's economy is facing many challenges associated with high oil prices," the embassy said in a statement.
The embassy said that the two leaders also discussed the Palestinian-Israeli issue, with Abdullah underscoring the importance of pursuing a two-state solution, and the need to provide humanitarian assistance to inhabitants of the Palestinian territories.
The king also welcomed the formation of the Iraqi government as a step toward peace and stability.
"Jordan, for its, part will continue to support the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people in achieving their aspirations," Abdullah said.
Last week, Bush spoke by telephone with Abdullah about a number of issues related to Iraq, including the newly-formed government there.
