GAZA CITY (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has slammed an Israeli ground offensive in the Gaza Strip "collective punishment" after civilian infrastructure was damaged in air strikes.

"President Mahmud Abbas condemns the Israeli aggression and considers this aggression against civilian targets and infrastructure collective punishment on the Palestinian people," his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP.

Israel sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip Wednesday and knocked out bridges and a power station from the air in a pre-dawn assault to try to save a teenage soldier held by Palestinian fighters.
