Palestinian shot dead in Israel arrest operation

NABLUS, West Bank (AFP) - A Palestinian militant was shot dead by Israeli troops in an arrest operation in the northern West Bank city of Nablus and eight people were wounded, a medical source has said.
Medics who were allowed into the cemetery in Nablus after an exchange of fire between Israeli troops and gunmen found the body of one Palestinian.
Medical sources named the dead man as 23-year-old Mahmud Zukiri, who belonged to the radical Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades faction.
Eight Palestinians were admitted to hospital with light to moderate wounds after Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets and live rounds at stone-throwing protestors, medical sources said.
An Israeli military source confirmed that troops had identified "hitting" a gunman during an exchange of fire in Nablus.
The fatal shooting brought to 5,124 the number of people killed in Israeli-Palestinian violence since the start of the intifada in September 2000, most of them Palestinians, according to an AFP toll.
Palestinian witnesses and security sources reported heavy Israeli fire after troops entered the city in around 15 jeeps and surrounded the cemetery.
