OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada has asked for the return of an Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip to quell unrest in the region, a senior official said.
"Canada has been in communication with the government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to encourage a return to peace and calm. That begins, we think, with the return of Corporal (Gilad) Shalit ... and a respect for law and order," said the official.
"We want to be sure that people respect the rights of settlers and others to live in peace in the region," he added.
The official spoke during a technical briefing ahead of a Canada-US summit in Washington and asked not to be named.
Palestinian militants tunnelled under an Israeli checkpoint on Sunday and launched an attack that killed two soldiers. They also abducted Shalit, 19, taking him into the territory.
Israel responded by sending troops into the tiny territory, from which it withdrew in September last year, to recover the kidnapped soldier.
The Israeli military also destroyed key bridges, knocked out Gaza's sole power station and arrested 64 Hamas members, including a third of the Palestinian cabinet and a large number of lawmakers.
