JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israeli troops shot dead a detained illegal immigrant from Sudan who crossed from Egypt as he tried to escape on Friday, an army spokesman has said.

The man was in a group of people that included 13 Sudanese and three Palestinians and was picked up by an Israeli military patrol in the southern Negev desert.

"He jumped out of the van carrying the 16 people and did not stop despite orders from the soldiers, who ended up firing in his direction," an army spokesman said.

In May, the chairman of Israel's memorial to the Nazi Holocaust requested the Jewish state grant political asylum to refugees fleeing the Darfur conflict in Sudan.

Writing to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Yad Vashem chairman Avner Shalev said Israel was "obliged to act, even on the most minimal scale, to defend the honour and the human rights of refugees who have reached our shores".

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said the same month that around 200 Sudanese were being held in Israel for illegal entry, of whom at least 50 are from Darfur with about 20 of them granted permission to live in the country.
