Israeli agents testifying in US need aliases

CHICAGO

Prosecutors asked a federal judge Friday to allow Israeli intelligence agents who testify at an upcoming terrorism financing trial to use aliases and take the stand without spectators seeing them.

Prosecutors also asked US District Judge Amy St. Eve to allow the Israel Security Agency agents to use a non-public entrance to the courthouse and the courtroom and to testify wearing "light disguise."

They said in court papers the measures were needed to protect the agents from reprisals for their testimony at the trial of Abdelhaleem Ashqar, 48, and Muhammad Salah, 53.

The two men are charged with providing financial aid to the Palestinian military group Hamas to carry out shootings, kidnappings and other acts of terrorism. The case is due to go to trial in October.
