WASHINGTON (AFP) - Most Americans oppose any involvement by their government in the Middle East conflict, and are divided on whether US troops should participate in a peacekeeping force, according to a poll.

The poll of 633 adults conducted in one day by CNN and published Wednesday also found that more Americans, 45 percent, disapprove of how President George W. Bush is handling the ongoing conflict, than approve, 38 percent.

When asked whether the United States should play an active role in trying to solve the conflict, 65 percent of respondents said 'no'.

However, they were divided regarding the participation of US troops in an eventual peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, with 45 percent in favor and 42 percent against -- a statistical dead heat since the poll had a four percent margin of error.

As to where Americans' sympathies lie in the conflict pitting Israel against Hezbollah militants, 57 percent said with Israel, four percent with Hezbollah and 20 percent with neither.

And Israel's response to Hezbollah's initial aggression was found to be about right for 35 percent of respondents, exaggerated for 31 percent, and too restrained for 14 percent.

Forty-three percent said Israel should agree to a ceasefire as soon as possible, while 39 percent believed Israel should carry on its attacks until Hezbollah's military might is quashed.
