TEHRAN (AFP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez arrived in Tehran, bringing with him a welcome anti-imperialist message for his fellow anti-American leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
"We will stand beside Iran in every time and occasion and under every circumstance," Chavez vowed at the start of his two day visit to Tehran, his fourth visit to the Islamic republic since 2000.
"If we are united, we can not only resist but we can also defeat imperialism," the charismatic president told reporters.
Like Venezuela, Iran is under almost constant pressure from the United States -- with the Islamic republic now facing a Security Council resolution ordering it to freeze its controversial nuclear programme.
Ahmadinejad made no mention of Iran's woes at the UN, but was happy to emphasise that "in terms of international and political issues, we both have common stances and viewpoints."
They said their talks would focus on oil, gas, investment, banking, science and technology, with a petrochemical deal due to be signed on Sunday.
Chavez is also due to open a new Venezuelan embassy in Tehran, meet Iranian business leaders and receive an honorary medal from Tehran University.
He had been scheduled to touch down in Iran on Friday -- his 52nd birthday. No reason has been given for the delay.
