MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has told British Prime Minister Tony Blair "of the need for an immediate halt to hostilities" in Lebanon, the Kremlin has said.

The message was delivered Sunday during a telephone conversation initiated by Blair.

"Vladimir Putin underlined the need for an immediate halt to the hostilities in Lebanon which have already claimed hundreds of victims and taken the region to the edge of a humanitarian catatrophe," the Kremlin statement said.

The two leaders had noted "the importance of a global settlement in the Middle East and the resumption of a political peace process."

The talks focused on the resolution to be submitted to the United Nations Security Council, the statement said.

France and the United States Saturday submitted a draft resolution which "calls for a full cessation of hostilities based upon, in particular, the immediate cessation by Hezbollah of all attacks and the immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations."

The two sponsors say they are encouraged by the reaction of the 13 other security council members. But Lebanon has rejected the resolution because it does not provide for an end to hostilities and wants the text modified.
