WASHINGTON (AFP) - Opposition Democrats rejected as "rose-colored" President George W. Bush's assertion that the month-long hostilities in the Middle East had ended with Hezbollah's defeat by Israel.
"Hopefully Hezbollah was dealt a real blow in ... Lebanon. Hopefully they're weaker, but the evidence seems to be that -- at best -- the outcome is uncertain," US Senator Carl Levin, top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters.
"One thing we ought to avoid are the rose-colored scenarios, the rose-colored conclusions claiming victory -- as was done in Iraq prematurely -- and claiming as the president did yesterday, that Hezbollah was dealt a defeat," he said.
The Democratic senator added: "It seems to me you've got to be very objective, very straightforward, very honest about what we are facing if you're going to try to rally the world against the terrorist threat."
Levin's remarks, after the start of Monday's ceasefire between the two warring sides, were in answer to Bush's comments Monday that "Hezbollah attacked Israel. Hezbollah started the crisis. And Hezbollah suffered a defeat."
