JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) - The Saudi foreign minister criticized Arab countries that favor ties with non-Arab states at the expense of inter-Arab relations, and called for a revamp of the Arab League.

"Our identity is threatened," Prince Saud al-Faisal told reporters. "Some (Arab) countries establish contacts with other countries at the expense of relations between member states" of the Arab League.

"We hope to deal with this matter through improving the (common) Arab performance," he said, referring to a Saudi proposal to restructure the Arab League.

"We hope to define our commitments towards each other in this alliance which is called the Arab League," he added.

Faisal's criticism appeared to be targeting Syria, which boasts strong relations with Iran, although he did not name it. The two Arab countries have exchanged implicit criticism over the war in Lebanon.

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad lashed out at Arabs who did not support the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, prompting an instant retort from Faisal, who said he hoped Damascus would be careful to safeguard Arab unity.
